A new treatment for debilitating Crohn's disease, which can plague individuals their entire lives, is proving effective, a London physician involved in evaluating the drug said yesterday.

Crohn's disease causes inflammation of the intestinal tract and includes symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, abdominal pains and severe weight loss. It hits about 170,000 Canadians.

Information on the Clinical trials regarding the safety and effectiveness of the new drug, Cimzia, were reported recently in the New England Journal of Medicine. Cimzia is administered to patients through injection once in every four weeks duration.
