Zimbabwe's bruised Tsvangirai appears in court - Opposition leader detained in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, nursing a deep head wound and limping, was sent to hospital on Tuesday when he arrived at court with dozens of others arrested during political protests.

Several other detainees had to be carried into the court and some sat on the floor. One was wearing a blood-stained shirt and all appeared dirty, disheveled and tired.

State lawyer Florence Ziyambi ordered that the accused -- said by their party to have been badly beaten in police custody -- were to be taken to hospital for treatment.
