Risk of diseases increased due to failure of Sewage plant
There are not less than hundreds of thousands of victims of flood that are facing an increased risk from bugs in contaminated water. The failure of sewage plants could lead to the spread of micro-organisms such as the noroviruses, which may cause gastroenteritis and winter vomiting disease to arise in the future.
Under normal conditions, sewage plants remove viruses, bacteria and other potentially harmful micro-organisms from sewage before the cleansed effluent is released into nearby rivers, lakes or seas. Severn Trent Water said 140,000 properties across Cheltenham, Tewkesbury and Gloucester had been left without water after a local treatment centre flooded.
The Mythe water treatment plant near Tewkesbury was shut down very recently after it was submerged by flood water. A truly alarming scenario for the civilians all around.
